High electricity prices: It is particularly expensive in these federal states

Depending on the federal state, consumers pay different electricity prices. An overview of where it is particularly cheap and why that is the case.

According to the comparison portal Verivox, electricity prices for basic supplies vary by hundreds of euros depending on the federal state. While a household in Thuringia pays an average of 2,026 euros per year, in the cheapest federal state of Bremen it is only 1,537 euros, Verivox said. Three-person households with an annual consumption of 4,000 kilowatt hours were used for the analysis.

Electricity prices most expensive in Thuringia and Saarland

“The large differences in electricity prices between the federal states can be explained in part by the different electricity network fees,” said Thorsten Storck, energy expert at Verivox. This also depends on the area, the number of electricity connections and the expansion of renewable energies. Procurement costs also play a role. “Electricity suppliers who have paid high wholesale prices also demand more from their customers.”

In addition to Thuringia, the prices of regional electricity suppliers are comparatively high, especially in Saarland (1,892 euros), Schleswig-Holstein (1,850 euros) and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania (1,849 euros). In addition to Bremen, it is also cheap in Lower Saxony (1,692 euros), Bavaria (1,710 euros) and Hesse (1,735 euros).
