Equality: Greens demand right to work from home – especially for women

During the pandemic, there was hardly any other option. Even today, some people do not want to do without it. The Greens are now demanding the right to work from home.

The Greens have demanded that Labor Minister Hubertus Heil (SPD) grant them the right to work from home, especially to support women. “Working from home is particularly important for women in order to be able to balance family and work,” said labor market politician Beate Müller-Gemmeke (Greens) to the “Tagesspiegel” in Berlin. It is about time sovereignty and about when you work, how long and where.

The background to this is a debate about the return from home office to the office at companies such as SAP or Deutsche Bank. The coalition agreement already stipulates that employees should have the right to work from home in the future. However, this depends on the respective profession. This goal has not yet been implemented.

So far, Labor Minister Heil has only presented initial non-binding recommendations on occupational safety in hybrid screen work. This is not enough for the Greens. The party is therefore calling for further protection of the right to work from home.

The unions have also been critical. Daniel Gimpel, union secretary at Verdi, regrets that the plan has been shelved: “In principle, the future must be about enabling self-determined mobile working in the home office.”
