The Galeries Lafayette in Berlin is closing after 28 years. The luxury department store is luring customers with one last big sale. The atmosphere between the empty shelves is reminiscent of the end of the world.
Gloria Gaynor’s voice echoes all the way to Friedrichstrasse. “Think I’d crumble? You think I’d lay down and die? No, not I, I will survive!” People of all classes stop, tilt their heads back and look up at the glass facade of Berlin’s last luxury department store.
“Do you want to go in?” a woman asks her companion. “They’re closing today. It’s something you should experience.” The Galeries Lafayette, symbol of decadence, wealth and consumerism, is closing – after almost 29 years and forever.
