When it comes to appearing on the Internet, the 250 top-selling companies in Upper Austria have some catching up to do. Despite the increased importance due to the pandemic, page speeds in 2021 would even have worsened compared to the previous year, according to a study by the Vienna agency Otago Online Consulting. For the seventh time, it examined the websites of local companies and used Google’s “PageSpeed Insights” analysis tool.
“Many companies are aware of the relevance of a fast website, but are still late in implementing it,” says Jan Königstätter, founder of Otago. This applies above all to mobile websites: According to the study, only five percent of companies achieve a result of 90 points or more, i.e. twelve out of 250 companies. The front runners are the trading company VOG, the stamp and laser specialist TroGroup and the supplier Polytec.

Google’s criteria are strict: the content of a page, which is visible without scrolling, must be available in less than a second so that the user can interact with the page. Content on the desktop usually loads faster than on a mobile display.
Königstätter advises companies that are lagging behind to do their mobile work primarily. “Many customers make purchasing decisions because they research the Internet beforehand with their mobile phones.” In order to generate clicks, it is helpful to reduce the size of images, reduce the number of intermediate steps and position content in a visually targeted manner, says the expert.
