The power went out at Frankfurt Airport for several hours overnight. Security was not affected. Some travelers will probably still feel the consequences on Tuesday.
After a power outage lasting several hours on Tuesday night, there may be delays and flight cancellations in holiday travel at Frankfurt Airport during the course of the day. Flights operated by Discover Airlines and Lufthansa, among others, could be affected, said a spokesman for airport operator Fraport. He recommended that travelers find out about their flights in advance.
According to current findings, a transformer failure in a substation caused the power outage. The incident occurred at around 11 p.m., which was the start of the night flight ban. The emergency power supply, which supplies all safety-relevant systems, was activated, said the spokesman. Safety at Germany’s largest airport was never at risk.
The power outage affected areas A and partly B in Terminal 1 of the airport. This sector is mainly used by Lufthansa. The power supply was restored at around 3:30 a.m., before regular flight operations resumed at 5:00 a.m.
Lufthansa’s check-in machines may still fail, meaning that some luggage will have to be cleared manually, said the spokesman. With around 189,000 expected passengers and 1,242 flight movements, Tuesday is not a day when the airport will be at its peak, but disruptions are of course inconvenient for air travelers, especially in the morning and during the holiday season.
