The wave of bankruptcies continues. After a brief respite in June, more insolvent companies are going to the insolvency judge again.
In Germany, the number of company bankruptcies is rising again at a faster pace. According to preliminary figures, 13.5 percent more cases were filed with the courts in July than a year earlier, according to the Federal Statistical Office. In June, at 6.3 percent, there was only a single-digit increase for the first time in months.
It is still unclear whether all registered bankruptcies will actually result in proceedings that will then be included in the official statistics. According to these final results, there were 1,934 corporate bankruptcies filed in May. That was 30.9 percent more than in May 2023.
Creditors are worried about 3.4 billion euros, compared to 4.0 billion euros a year ago. On average, the proceedings have become smaller. Companies in the transport and warehousing sectors are most frequently affected. Temporary employment agencies and construction companies also frequently declare their insolvency.
According to the Halle Institute for Economic Research (IWH), the most recent filings in July primarily affect industrial companies. The significant increase in the number of insolvencies affects all sectors, but is particularly strong in industry: after 100 industrial companies filed for bankruptcy in June, 145 filed for bankruptcy in July.
