Rail travel: Rail punctuality improved again in July

Due to severe weather, almost every second long-distance train was delayed in June – the situation improved in July. But things are still not running smoothly on the railways.

Deutsche Bahn’s long-distance trains were more punctual in July than they have been recently. Nevertheless, the situation on the railways remains tense. More than one in three ICE and IC trains were delayed by at least six minutes, the company announced. From this time on, a train is recorded as being delayed in the statistics.

The punctuality rate last month was 62 percent. This was a significant improvement compared to June. Severe storms and severe flood damage had caused punctuality to plummet to less than 53 percent in the previous month. Passengers also noticed this during the European Football Championship, when a particularly large number of people traveled by train.

Travelers were also more punctual

The so-called passenger punctuality has also recovered. In July it was 67.2 percent, almost twelve percentage points higher than in June. This value shows the proportion of passengers who arrived on time during the measured period, i.e. with a delay of less than 15 minutes. Unlike operational punctuality, this statistic also takes train cancellations into account.

The main problem continues to be the numerous construction sites on the overloaded and, in many places, outdated rail network. They are slowing down rail traffic considerably. The railway has therefore changed its construction site management and intends to bundle many jobs into specified time slots in the future.
