Companies: New funding for climate protection in SMEs and CCS

Some industrial processes require a lot of energy. In the future, fewer greenhouse gases should be produced – something that Minister Habeck wants to support with new funding.

Federal Minister of Economics Robert Habeck wants to promote the transition to more climate-friendly production methods and underground carbon dioxide storage with around 3.3 billion euros by 2030. Projects with a size of 500,000 euros or more for small and medium-sized companies and one million euros or more for large companies are eligible for support under the new “Federal Funding for Industry and Climate Protection”. For projects with a volume of 15 million euros or more, the federal states are to contribute 30 percent. The money comes from the Climate and Transformation Fund (KTF).

The new funding is intended for companies in the energy-intensive basic materials industry, the steel and foundry sectors, and the glass, ceramics, paper and cement industries, among others.

The capture and underground storage of climate-damaging carbon dioxide (CO2), which has been criticized by environmental organizations, is also to be promoted. “The funding is limited to CO2 emissions that are difficult to avoid,” says the ministry. Projects in the areas of lime, cement, thermal waste treatment, basic chemicals, glass and ceramics are eligible for funding.
