The process for a bill issued by the Federal Reserve (FED) to enter the street has its respective stages.

These are the steps prior to the circulation of the dollar in the market

Before the actual circulation there are 4 necessary steps. The first is the Design of the ticket itself, then you must comply with the Order conducted by the Federal Reserve Board. Third, the FED-chartered banks conduct the Production, that is, the actual manufacturing. Finally, there is the Emission.

Design

The design process is an interagency effort involving the Federal Reserve, the Treasury Department, the Bureau of Engraving and Printing, and the United States Secret Service.

Order

Using an estimate by the Federal Reserve Board of how much currency the public will demand in the year, an order is placed with the Bureau of Engraving and Printing.

Production

The Bureau of Engraving and Printing manufactures banknotes to order for the Federal Reserve at its facilities in Washington, DC and Fox Worth, Texas.

Emission

The Federal Reserve Board pays the cost of production to the Bureau of Engraving and Printing and in turn arranges and pays for transportation from its facilities to the executive offices of the Federal Reserve Bank.

Circulation

The Federal Reserve Bank’s cash offices distribute notes to the public through depository institutions: commercial banks, credit unions, and savings and loan associations.
