On the third day of the crew strike at the Lufthansa subsidiary Discover, the pilots’ union is changing its strategy. Now another of the group’s airlines is to be struck.
The pilots’ union Vereinigung Cockpit (VC) is extending its strike at Lufthansa’s holiday airline Discover for the third day. On Thursday, from 6 p.m. to midnight, the pilots who fly Lufthansa Cityline’s cargo flights will also stop working. The union in Frankfurt announced that it was a solidarity strike.
The fleet of three Airbus A321 cargo aircraft is on strike. According to VC, three rotations with a total of eight flights are planned during the strike period. It is not yet clear whether the flights will be cancelled, as the company could, for example, use pilots from management as replacements.
The actual strike at Discover has only resulted in isolated cancellations on its third day. According to the company, only one long-haul flight and a few European connections had to be cancelled. Three short-haul flights were again taken over by partner airlines.
Sharp criticism of the industrial action
With the four-day strikes, the Ufo and VC trade unions, which are rooted in the Lufthansa Group, want to enforce their own collective agreements after management agreed on a contract with its competitor Verdi. Verdi only represents a few pilots and flight attendants in the company, Ufo and VC say. The holiday airline Discover Airlines, founded in 2021, currently has 27 aircraft with which it flies to holiday destinations in Europe and overseas. Around 1,900 people work on board.
