Canadian professor Nick Srnicek was named Honorary Professor at the UBA

The professor of digital economy was received by the authorities of the UBA. In his lecture, the researcher analyzed the interaction of political economy and new digital technologies.

At an event held at the Faculty of Economic Sciences, the vice-rector, Emiliano Yacobittigave to the professor Nick Srnicek the distinction of Honorary Professor. The Canadian came to visit the country to speak on “The future of work: technologies, urban spaces and time use”.

Nick Srnicek was born in Canada in 1982, he is Professor of Digital Economics at the Department of Digital Humanities at King’s College London. A doctor in international relations, he was editor of Millennium: Journal of International Studies. He is also one of the driving forces and referents of the discussions that have renewed the debates in recent years, especially since the publication of the “Accelerationist Manifesto”.

His research is based on the interaction of political economy and technologyand they analyze both the threats and opportunities that arise from this relationship. In a packed auditorium, Yacobitti stressed that “It is a pride to have Nick Srnicek at the University of Buenos Airesan excellent place to discuss and reflect.” And he added: “Let everyone know that the UBA has its doors open to learn and think, regardless of ideologies. And in that framework, it is a satisfaction for me to deliver this distinction of Honorary Professor, which was voted by the Higher Council of our university”.

The lecture by Srnicek, who is visiting our country for the first time, was organized by the Institute for Future Urban Challenges, the publisher Black Boxthe Buenos Aires legislature and the Secretariat of Strategic Linkage of the University of Buenos Aires.

The researcher is concerned with analyzing the interaction of political economy and new digital technologies, the threats and opportunities of the new economic panorama and studying both the threats and opportunities that arise from this relationship. He also stressed that the challenge is to use the technologies that are available willingness to make the most of our freedom. For Srnicek, free time is the highest measure of civilization, and it opens the door for us to be able to reflect on our problemsenjoy life and get more involved in the issues that interest us. In this framework, the Canadian professor encourages us to rethink work, the way we organize our lives and even We design our cities.

Srnicek is the author of Platform capitalism (Black Box, 2018) and After work (with Helen Hester; Black Box, 2024), as well as co-author of the Accelerationist Manifesto together with Alex Williams, with whom he also published Inventing the Future: Postcapitalism and the World Without Work.
