Tiktok: History influencer educates millions about the Holocaust

She reaches millions on Tiktok and Co. with videos about National Socialism. Susanne Siegert tells us what politicians do wrong online in star-Conversation.

Ms. Siegert, why do you call your channels “none.culture of remembrance“?
I once listened to a podcast episode with Jens Christian Wagner, the director of the Buchenwald and Mittelbau-Dora Memorial Foundation. I was very impressed by the conversation. He talked about how we need to distance ourselves from certain terms. The term “remembering,” for example, because we can only remember what we personally experienced. That has a rather deterrent effect on many young people because it has the feel of a raised finger.

The culture of remembrance relies heavily on survivors and contemporary witnesses, which will soon no longer be possible. Instead, I prefer to use the term “commemorative work”. It doesn’t have that romantic “remembering” connotation where you can hear the crackling of the fire in the fireplace. It rather shows: This is work and we have to do this work now. We have to be active and active ourselves.
