Deputy Chairman of the State Duma Committee on International Affairs Alexei Chepa commented on Wednesday, January 12, the statement of US Deputy Secretary of State Wendy Sherman that the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline poses a threat to the energy and national security of many countries of the Euro-Atlantic community.
“This is an absolute absurdity, an attempt to once again turn everything upside down and vice versa. It is clear that they have no arguments for this. These are just unfounded statements, “Chepa said in an interview with RT.
The parliamentarian stressed that more than 60% of the citizens of Germany are in favor of launching Nord Stream 2.
“The only thing that can stop the Americans is their economic interests in the supply of liquefied gas to Europe,” the deputy said. According to him, the United States has no other arguments, “no, there was not, and cannot be”.
Earlier that day, US Deputy Secretary of State Wendy Sherman made a statement at a press conference following a meeting of the NATO-Russia Council that the Nord Stream 2 project threatens the energy and national security of many countries of the Euro-Atlantic community, writes Life.Ru.
On January 11, US Undersecretary of State Victoria Nuland said that the United States is currently working with Germany and the European Union to delay the launch of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline.
On December 28, German Foreign Minister Annalena Berbock announced that Nord Stream 2 plays a geostrategic role. At the same time, she stressed that for her SP-2 is more than just a private economic project, as the new German chancellor, Olaf Scholz, called it earlier.
The construction of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline was completed on September 10, 2021. It was built from Russia to Germany along the Baltic seabed with the aim of direct gas supplies to Europe. The EU countries mainly support the project and participate in its implementation. The Baltic states, Poland, the United States and Ukraine are opposed. On December 16, Germany postponed a decision on certification of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline until at least mid-2022.
