Herbert Diess wanted to fire 30,000 VW employees in Wolfsburg – and had to go. How does he view the German car industry today?
Two years ago, Herbert Diess was replaced as head of the VW Group. He had called 30,000 jobs in Wolfsburg into question, and the works council was furious. As is the case today, the issue was the costs of the plants and their productivity. Diess claims to have put the problem on the agenda – but he was no longer able to solve it. In the interview, the former boss does not want to judge his successor, but he is willing to analyze the car industry. He still advises the industry, heads the supervisory board of the chip company Infineon, which supplies car manufacturers, and is involved in the start-up The Mobility House, which develops charging solutions for electric vehicles.
