The 2021 record is higher than 9,872,997 tons in 2020, a year affected by the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic, but also 11,103,556 tons in 2019 and 11,892,858 in 2018, so it is necessary to go back at 12,203,137 tonnes in 2017 to find a higher level.
The evolution coincides with that of the economic activity in general and that of the construction in particular, which fell in a decline from the process of devaluation of the peso that began in the second quarter of 2018, with a special impact on the real estate market.
As it is one of the main inputs in the sector, the increase in cement dispatches is taken as a preview of the data on the general activity of the construction sector, which the National Institute of Statistics and Censuses (Indec) will release on the February 8 next.
The year-on-year increase in cement shipments has been taking place since September 2020, anticipating the Synthetic Indicator of Construction Activity, which registers increases as of November of that year.
Therefore, the activity already shows sixteen consecutive months of year-on-year growth in dispatches, a performance that, although it is conditioned by the low base of comparison of the first tranches of the pandemic, has no precedent in the immediate previous years.
The impact of the restrictions due to the pandemic was decisive in the drop in the level of dispatches in 2020 and, in addition, had an impact on the monthly drop in April and May 2021, when some containment measures were re-established that affected industry activity of the construction.
Shipments for 2021 were made up of 12,010,908 tons destined for the domestic market and 114,672 for export, while those for December were 1,025,371 and 9,354 tons, respectively.
As there was no import of cement (as in the last 36 months), domestic consumption was again equal to the local dispatch.
