Economic policy: DIW for government technology funds worth billions

The industry is facing challenges: Digitization should be driven forward, ecological concerns should be given greater consideration. The DIW has now come up with a proposal to promote this change.

The German Institute for Economic Research (DIW) proposes government technology funds worth billions to support digital and ecological change in industry.

In order to provide an effective impetus for the transformation of the industry, the federal government should provide an estimated 30 billion euros, according to the proposal on the occasion of the federal election in September.

According to the DIW, a competitive, innovative industry is of central importance, especially for Germany as an export nation. Industry accounts for more than 80 percent of German exports. “The digital and ecological challenges are gigantic and will require billions in investments over the next few years,” the scientists write.

From the perspective of the DIW, however, the content of the funds must not only be based on economic interests, but must also be based on broad social requirements. The DIW names microelectronics, battery cells, green hydrogen, digital platforms and additive manufacturing as technology fields. The projects should also be designed in such a way that not only individual companies benefit from them.
