The US Senate rejected a bill on sanctions against the Russian Nord Stream 2 following a vote, which became known on Thursday, January 13.
The US Senate was due to vote on a bill to impose sanctions on Russia’s Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline proposed by Republican Senator Ted Cruz. But Democrats criticized him before the vote count. Cruz failed to get the 60 votes required to pass the bill, Reuters reports.
Cruz’s bill proposed that Nord Stream 2 AG be sanctioned within 15 days of its passage.
Senator Jeanne Sheikhin, a Democrat who initially campaigned with Cruz for the pipeline’s sanctions bill, said she now opposes it as it threatens to drive a wedge between the United States and allies in Europe, especially Germany.
Earlier in the day, the US administration opposed the draft sanctions on the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline proposed by Republican Senator Ted Cruz. The White House noted that the Republican’s initiative is unlikely to help Ukraine. On the contrary, the sanctions project could undermine the “unity of European allies.”
Washington has been noted for its consistent opposition to the project and has already imposed sanctions on Nord Stream 2 several times, which, as experts pointed out, has complicated relations with Germany, which supports the project. At the same time, as Igor Ananskikh, First Deputy Chairman of the State Duma Energy Committee, pointed out in an interview with Izvestia, the attempts of American politicians to postpone the launch of SP-2 are being carried out for the economic benefit of their LNG supplier companies.
The construction of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline was completed on September 10. It was built from Russia to Germany along the bottom of the Baltic Sea for the purpose of direct gas supplies to Europe. The EU countries mainly support the project and participate in its implementation. The Baltic States, Poland, the United States and Ukraine are opposed. On December 16, Germany postponed the decision to certify the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline until at least mid-2022.
