More than 2 thousand sites of false banks were blocked in Russia in 2021

In 2021, the Central Bank (CB) blocked 2,060 phishing sites that imitated the resources of real banks. This was announced on Thursday, January 13, at the press service of the Bank of Russia.

“False banks not only pose a danger to citizens who can transfer their personal and banking data to attackers, but also cause reputational damage to financial organizations,” Gazeta.ru quoted the Central Bank as saying.

The regulator added that from December 1, 2021, Internet resources used by cybercriminals to steal money from Russians began to be blocked out of court.

“Operational restriction of access to the websites of illegal organizations helps to reduce risks for consumers of financial services, reduce the number of citizens affected by the actions of intruders,” the Central Bank concluded.

On December 10, the Bank of Russia reported that hundreds of thousands of Russians become victims of cyber scammers every year, most of which use social engineering techniques. According to the regulator, last quarter cyber fraudsters stole 18.5% more funds from clients of Russian banks than a year ago – more than 3.2 billion rubles.

Earlier, on December 9, Russian President Vladimir Putin said that protecting citizens from fraudulent schemes is one of the main priorities. He also said that amendments were made to the law on the activities of credit and consumer cooperatives, which made it possible to prohibit the issuance of loans secured by the only housing and put a barrier to fraudulent schemes of microcredit organizations.
