Construction project in Hafencity: Opening of the Überseequartier in Hamburg postponed again

The XXL construction project in the Überseequartier was actually supposed to open in April. But water damage stopped that. It was supposed to start in the fall – but now that’s also a thing of the past.

The opening of the Überseequartier in Hamburg with its huge shopping mall has been postponed again. Instead of October, the XXL construction project in the Hafencity will now only open in spring 2025. This was announced by the real estate company Unibail-Rodamco-Westfield.

The delay creates additional time for the completion of the commissioning phase of the project. This mainly concerns aspects of building technology such as fire protection and security systems.

Investments of more than one billion euros

The Überseequartier is part of the Hafencity, which is considered Europe’s largest inner-city urban development project. A large shopping center with many shops, offices, a cruise terminal, hotels and almost 600 apartments are being built on the site.

Unibail-Rodamco-Westfield is reportedly investing more than one billion euros. The opening was originally supposed to be in 2021. Since then, it has been postponed several times, most recently due to unexpected water damage. There have also been several serious accidents on the construction site, with several workers losing their lives.
