The German car industry is in crisis and solutions are urgently needed. Before the car summit, a proposal was made that brought back memories.

According to a proposal from the SPD parliamentary group, anyone who gets rid of their combustion engine in favor of a new electric car should receive a bonus of 6,000 euros. According to information from “Stern”, this is based on a paper by the parliamentary group’s economic policymakers. If you switch to a used electric car, you should receive a bonus of 3,000 euros. “We are convinced that electric cars are the future,” the MPs wrote ahead of a meeting of the federal government with representatives of the automotive industry this Monday in Berlin.

“The car summit must send a clear signal that companies and politicians are working together to overcome the current slump,” said Social Democratic economic politician Sebastian Roloff to “Stern”. Other proposals in the paper include a state surcharge on e-car leasing for people with low or medium incomes and funding for private charging boxes, storage and charging stations.

Deputy parliamentary group leader Verena Hubertz said: “VW and the automotive industry are the engine of Germany. If the engine sputters, we have to get it going.” During the economic crisis in 2009, Germany had already promoted the exchange of cars with a bonus. Anyone who scrapped their old car and bought a new one received an environmental bonus of 2,500 euros. Many spoke of a “scrappage bonus”.
