Electromobility: Siemens outsources charging solutions for electric vehicles

The Munich-based technology group is putting its charging business into its own legal entity. The aim is more independence and possible partnerships.

Siemens wants to spin off its business with charging solutions for electric vehicles. The division, which has around 1,300 employees worldwide, is to have its own legal structure, the company announced. This will give Siemens eMobility “more freedom,” says Siemens board member Matthias Rebellius, whose Smart Infrastructure area of responsibility also includes the charging business. This will put it “well positioned to enter into new partnerships.”

The company did not initially comment on whether Siemens intends to permanently separate itself from eMobility, for example whether it will be sold or floated on the stock exchange. However, the clear reference to partnerships and the fact that eMobility will not be outsourced to so-called portfolio companies, as Siemens has repeatedly done in the past with business areas it wants to separate from, tends to speak against this.

Siemens had only completed the purchase of the Dutch bus and truck charging solutions expert Heliox at the beginning of the year. The vehicle charging business has locations in Germany, Portugal, the USA, India and the Netherlands.
