Electromobility: BMW at the Auto Summit: Industry does not need flash in the pan

The Munich-based manufacturer is not a fan of high levels of government sales support. Instead, the company wants to invest in framework conditions such as affordable charging options.

BMW does not believe in proposals discussed in the run-up to the “Auto Summit”, such as a new scrappage bonus or bonuses for electric cars. “The German automotive industry does not need short-term, market-distorting flash in the pan,” the company said on Monday. Instead, the focus should be on sustainable framework conditions that make it easier for customers to decide in favor of electric vehicles. This includes charging points in both public and private areas, as well as access to cheap charging current. “Because if the cost of a kilometer driven electrically is higher than with gasoline or diesel, many customers lack a key incentive for electric vehicles,” it said in Munich.

Federal Minister of Economics Robert Habeck (Greens) and the automotive industry will discuss the crisis in the sector on Monday afternoon. Representatives of the industry association VDA, the union IG Metall and manufacturers such as Volkswagen, BMW and Mercedes will be taking part in the video conference.

Before the meeting, many demands were made to stimulate the collapsed demand, especially for electric cars. It is unclear whether concrete measures will be put in place at the “auto summit”.
