Brain, hormones and psyche – our personality is influenced by many factors. Neurobiologist and psychologist Nicole Strüber explains in the stern podcast which of these have a massive impact. And: There are astonishing interactions.
They exist: the Buddha babies who sleep soundly at the loudest party, as well as the little screamers who make a train journey a real ordeal for everyone involved. The friend who nervously writes packing lists three weeks before a trip, and the bon vivant who takes everything as it comes. How do these differences come about and can we change them?
An absolute must for a healthy psyche: Strengthening one another
Genes or environment – which parameter shapes our personality? You can’t separate the two, says Nicole Strüber, who holds a doctorate in neurobiology and studied psychology. ”Our brain is naturally programmed for social interaction,” she says in a conversation with Simone Menne, host of the star-Podcast ”The Boss – Power is Female”. And she wishes for a world in which this ability is promoted more, from early childhood to old age.
Even the way we start out in life influences our later ability to have successful relationships and how we deal with stress. Parents have a significant influence on how these develop. “Some children are naturally more sensitive, for example. They have certain gene variants in which stress hormones such as cortisol have a greater effect in the body and calming substances such as oxytocin have a lesser effect,” she explains. But positive experiences and particularly sensitive interactions could ensure that the disadvantageous genes are switched off and the more advantageous ones switched on.
What this means for childcare, whether a child is better off in a nursery or at home and the dark side of the ”cuddle hormone” oxytocin, Nicole Strüber talks about in the star-Podcast “The Boss – Power is Female”.
