Tim Köhler, director of the German gas industry association Zukunft Gas, believes that the launch of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline will take place during 2022. He announced this on Sunday, January 16, in an interview with Izvestia.
“I am sure that Nord Stream 2 will be launched, and I am sure that this will happen within this year. This will affect price dumping, as the situation will level off again,” he said.
According to him, after the launch, stabilization will begin, and not the constant fluctuations that have been observed in recent weeks.
“So this will certainly affect the situation in the future, and I know that the European partners who, together with Gazprom, participated in Nord Stream 2 are very interested in long-term relations with the largest gas supplier to Europe,” emphasized by the expert.
Koehler drew attention to the fact that very high prices are not beneficial for Gazprom, because they will lead to a decrease in gas consumption.
“High prices will lead to a reduction in gas consumption because high prices stop industrial production. Therefore, Gazprom is certainly not interested in too high prices. We need to find a situation that will bring prices down to a sustainable level so that the potential of natural gas for the EU can be used by the European consumer,” the specialist said.
In addition, the director of Zukunft Gas believes that it is still necessary to create a stable situation in all areas of the market when SP-2 is put into operation.
“And we certainly need a stronger development of the natural gas market in Europe and in particular in Germany. So in the future, the demand will be met and the strategic role of natural gas will be reflected in the changing energy balance in Europe, in particular in Germany,” Köhler concluded.
Earlier, on January 12, Bundestag MP from the Alternative for Germany party Jan Nolte said that blocking the commissioning of the gas pipeline from the very beginning was a political mistake. According to him, the policy of provocations against Russia is wrong; it is primarily the low-income segments of the population who suffer from high gas prices who are paying for it.
On the eve of his party colleague Steffen Kotre expressed the hope that the SP-2 will be put into operation in 2022. According to the German politician, the Green Party wants to suspend the project for ideological reasons. With the federal government “unnecessarily surrendering to the EU,” Cotret noted, brushing aside the EU’s strategy to prevent NSP-2 from launching is becoming more difficult.
The construction of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline was completed on September 10, 2021. It was built from Russia to Germany along the bottom of the Baltic Sea for the purpose of direct gas supplies to Europe. The EU countries mainly support the project and participate in its implementation. The Baltic States, Poland, the United States and Ukraine are opposed. On December 16, Germany postponed the decision to certify the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline until at least mid-2022.
