The former president paid tribute to the University of Quilmes on its 35th anniversary and urged “to march to the front for our ideas.”
The former president Cristina Kirchner referred this Monday to the situation faced by national universities and called for joining the march in defense “not only of their present but, fundamentally, of their future.” The main objective of the mobilization is to reject the veto advanced by Javier Milei to the University Financing Lawwhich guarantees an increase in teacher salaries, among other points.
The former president’s message was given within the framework of the tribute to the 35th anniversary of the University of Quilmes. The mayor of this municipality, Mayra Mendoza, published the video on her X account and wrote: “Thousands and thousands of girls and boys are going to demonstrate in defense, not only of their present but, fundamentally, of their future.”
In a recorded message, Kirchner said: “This is a message for UNQUI, that is, for our beloved University of Quilmes. Mayra reminded me that they are celebrating 35 years and I didn’t want to be absent on this new anniversary. Especially in times like those that education in our country is going through in general, but, very particularly, the situation of the national university.public and free, in which I feel like a daughter and a contributor,” she began.
In this context, he pointed out against the Government’s plan: “Its definancing means, without a doubt, close the idea of progress and upward social mobility, which characterized an Argentina where the son or daughter of a worker could be president. I know what I’m talking about, I know it’s true because “I am a testimony of that country that we miss so much.”.
Finally, he urged people to join the federal mobilization in defense of public universities: “I know that this Wednesday, October 2, thousands and thousands of kids and kids are going to march in defense, not only of their present but, fundamentally, of their future. Happy anniversary dear UNQUI and, as always, march forward for our ideas”, he closed the message.
Second university march against the adjustment of Javier Milei
This Wednesday will be the second federal university march against the Government after the massive mobilization to Plaza de Mayo that students, teachers, unions, legislators and opposition leaders carried out the April 23 last in rejection of the budget cut that Milei’s management had implemented, and that had to be deactivated.
The project sanctioned by the Senate obliges the Executive Branch to update the budget items to cover operating, research and extension expenses in the universities, and establishes that every two months the Government must adjust the budgets of the universities according to inflation.
Given Milei’s announcement, not yet finalized, of veto the rule sanctioned on September 13the organizations that make up the university community also resolved to carry out a strike on the 26th and 27th of this month.
