Income distribution had its worst record since the pandemic in the second quarter

The inequality in Argentina reached its worst record since the pandemic as a consequence of increase in unemployment, the devaluation and the delay in salaries. He Gini coefficient grew from 0.417 to the 0.436 in the second quarter compared to the same period in 2023, as reported by the National Institute of Statistics and Censuses (INDEC).

The evolution of income distribution showed that between April and June the richest decile received 14 times more income than the lowest income decile, maintaining last year’s trend.

From the income distribution report, it appears that the 10% of the population with the highest family per capita income concentrated 33% of the total income in the second quarter of 2024, about 19 times more than the 10% with the lowest income.

In the first quarter, inequality marked its worst record in 16 years, standing at 0.467.

The evolution of income distribution of the second quarter is known a week after the data poverty, which showed that 52.9% of Argentines are in this situationwhile the destitution affected the 18.1%as reported INDEC.

Income of Argentines

Within the employed population, the report recorded a average income of $473,924 and a median income of $370,000equivalent to the upper income limit of decile 5, under which 50% of employed people are located.

The average income of the first four deciles of the population, ordered by income from the main occupation, was $153,323. The average income of the middle stratum was $460,120, while the income of deciles 9 and 10 was $1,145,011.

Regarding the salaried population, 9,632,592 people were registered with an average income of $501,825. The average income of people salaried employees with retirement discount was $638,811 (+241.6% year-on-year), while in the case of those without retirement discount, the average income is equivalent to $253,702 (+210.4% yoy).

In the case of homes, labor income represented 78.1% of total incomewhile non-labor income reached 21.9% remaining. The weight of non-labor income was greater for the lowest deciles of total family income: 62.2% in the first and 9.4% in the tenth.
