Working life: One in eight of younger pensioners still works

For many people, retirement is far from the end of their working lives. Financial motives are not the only reason.

In Germany, many people still work after retirement age. In the group of younger pensioners between 65 and 74 years of age, it is 13 percent, as the Federal Statistical Office reports based on the microcensus. At 16 percent, men are even more likely to have a job than women, one in ten of whom are employed. At 18 percent, people with higher educational qualifications are more likely to work longer hours than those with low (11 percent) or medium levels of education (12 percent).

The most important motive is financial necessity, cited by a third (33 percent) of working pensioners. Almost as many (29 percent) cite “enjoying work” as the main reason. 11 percent find the job lucrative or don’t want to quit because their partner is also still working. Social integration among colleagues is crucial for 9 percent.

As a rule, older people work a reduced number of hours: up to ten hours a week is the norm for 40 percent. However, 16 percent say they work more than 40 hours a week.
