Petrol and diesel: Fuel prices have fallen – authorities recommend using the app

How much does a liter of fuel cost? Anyone who drives along the streets will often notice the price signs at the gas stations. Recently, the information is likely to have lifted the mood.

The prices for gasoline and diesel at German gas stations have fallen significantly in recent months. While a liter of E5 premium gasoline cost a nationwide average of around 1.84 euros at the beginning of July, it was only 1.70 euros at the end of September, as the Federal Cartel Office in Bonn announced. The price of diesel fell from an average of 1.68 euros to 1.54 euros in the same period.

The federal authority has a good overview of price developments at the pumps, as the gas stations have to report price changes to it. The Cartel Office, in turn, passes the data on to apps where consumers can view the current price development. This price transparency is intended to stimulate competition in the interests of consumers.

Head of the authority Andreas Mundt recommends using the apps to fill up relatively cheaply. Drivers usually have to dig a lot deeper into their pockets when filling up in the morning than in the evening. In addition, there are sometimes large price differences, even though gas stations in the same city are quite close to each other. “By finding the cheapest gas stations nearby and at a convenient time, you can often save around 15 cents per liter,” says Germany’s top competition watchdog, Andreas Mundt.
