When it comes to the most popular travel destinations for Germans, Italy ranks at the top year after year. After all, the Mediterranean country is considered a place of longing in this country with its varied landscape with Alps, beaches and rolling hills, with pizza, pasta and dolce vita. Italy is not as popular as other countries among Germans of retirement age who emigrate abroad. Several regions benefit emigrants with lower taxes.

Most of the money from the German pension insurance goes to Italy, as their figures show. However, the majority of it goes to foreign insured people, i.e. Italian citizens, who acquired their pension rights in Germany and many of whom are probably returning to their home country to retire. For comparison: Austria is significantly more popular with more than 27,000 German pensioners, followed by Switzerland (26,000) and Spain (22,000).
