Survey: More than one in three people want to spend less on Christmas

Many people are planning a smaller budget for Christmas gifts and food this year, a survey shows. One in five people start their holiday shopping early.

According to a study, the clouded shopping mood is likely to have an impact on Christmas again this year. 37 percent of people in Germany want to spend less money on gifts and banquets, according to a representative survey by the market research institute Appinio.

For this purpose, 1,000 people between the ages of 16 and 65 were surveyed about their consumer behavior in mid-September. The most common reason for the tighter budget is the increased prices due to inflation. Almost 45 percent are planning as much money for Christmas as in the previous year, around 20 percent more.

According to the survey, even two and a half months before Christmas Eve, numerous people are already looking for gifts. One in five people start shopping in October or earlier; women do this more often than men. However, most start later, almost a third of consumers in November, 27 percent only a few weeks before the festival.

According to Appinio, Christmas continues to have great meaning for many people. 83 percent say they want to celebrate this year.
