The German motorways are famous for the speed allowed there – this does not apply to the charging stations at their rest areas.
Anyone who charges their electric car at German motorway service stations often has to be prepared for longer waiting times. The ADAC criticizes the infrastructure offered there as “in need of improvement”. A sample of 40 facilities along major highway routes revealed a laundry list of deficiencies.
At three of the systems examined there was no charging infrastructure at all, and at 16 others there was only weak charging stations with an output of less than 150 kilowatts. The testers only found more than 300 kilowatts, which often makes it possible to charge cars with the appropriate technology in less than a quarter of an hour, four times. In addition, there were often not enough charging stations, some of which were blocked by illegal parkers. And in contrast to traditional gas station customers, charging station users only rarely had a roof over their heads.
