2001 crisis
In December 2001, Argentina was mired in a deep economic crisis marked by the devaluation of the peso, the banking corralito and the fall of the government of Fernando De la Rúa. One of the most devastating measures, the banking corralito, was established on December 10, 2001 and severely limited the amount of money citizens could withdraw of their bank accounts, causing financial and social chaos. This measure sought to prevent capital flight, but ended up deepening the crisis and unleashing a mass discontent.
Another crucial point was default declaration of the external debt on December 23, 2001. This measure, although inevitable, led to a complex debt restructuring that took several years. The moratorium on debt payment allowed the government to allocate resources to internal stabilization, but also isolated Argentina from access to international financial markets for a long time.
On January 6, 2002, the government of Eduardo Duhalde abandoned the convertibility, that had kept the peso tied to the US dollar in a relationship of one by one. This devaluation led to a significant increase in inflation and poverty, further exacerbating the economic situation of many Argentines.
