Shopping tourism: Switzerland lowers limit for tax-free imports

Shopping in Germany is attractive for many Swiss because of the lower prices. But shopping tourism is a thorn in the side of Swiss businesses. Now the government is acting.

Bad news for German businesses near the Swiss border: Switzerland is halving the value of purchases for private use that can be imported tax-free. This is intended to curb shopping tourism.

From January 1, 2025, only goods worth 150 francs (around 160 euros) may be imported tax-free, as the Ministry of Finance announced. So far it has been 300 francs. If the value is higher, VAT must be paid on it. However, it is significantly lower in Switzerland than in Germany: 8.1 instead of 19 percent.

Tax payment via app

Because many goods are cheaper in Germany than in Switzerland, Swiss people who live near the border like to shop there. Many shops have adapted to Swiss customers. The same applies to the border regions with France, Italy and Austria.

The aim is to “improve tax justice and counteract shopping tourism,” says the Ministry of Finance. “Private individuals can independently declare their goods for import using the “Quick Zoll” customs clearance app and pay any duties directly via the app.”
