ARD bosses: The directors deserve that

They are the ladies and gentlemen of dozens of television and radio stations with tens of thousands of permanent and freelance employees: the directors of the ARD state broadcasters, i.e. the bosses of NDR, WDR, BR and Co.

Salaries of the ARD bosses at a glance

In their position, they make a significant contribution to the design and success of public broadcasting, for example deciding on strategies, personnel and finances. But sometimes they themselves are the subject of discussions – especially because of their salaries. After all, almost all households in Germany pay you through the broadcasting fee of 18.36 euros per month (read here: “You pay that much broadcasting fees elsewhere”)

Are the incomes too high, too low or just right? The institutions at least create a basis for the debate about this in their annual transparency reports. It lists how much money the directors earn annually.

The broadcasters’ supervisory bodies, usually the board of directors responsible for controlling finances, decide on their salaries.

In the photo series above you can see how high the salary is for the top job in your state broadcasting company – from the small Radio Bremen to the large Westdeutscher Rundfunk.

Note: The respective annual remuneration is stated, excluding any expense allowances paid in individual cases of up to 13,500 euros per year or benefits in kind (e.g. the monetary benefit of a privately taxable company car or a rail card).
