Google surveys have become massively used for phishing

In the second half of 2021, cases when attackers used Google services in their schemes became more frequent, Aleksey Marchenko, head of the development of content filtering methods at Kaspersky Lab, told Izvestia. In particular, according to him, fraudsters began to massively use polls created using the Google Forms service to send malicious links.

“An attacker creates a Google Forms survey with a single question. After that, he himself “passes” the survey, entering in the response field a link to a phishing resource and a phrase like “You are entitled to compensation of funds”, after which he indicates the victim’s email as a contact to receive a notification about passing the survey. As a result, a person receives a notification about the successful completion of the survey with “answers” (which are a message with fake content and a link from an attacker),” explained Alexey Marchenko.

He added that there were known cases of illegal use of other Google services, such as a calendar or documents. This is how a person is motivated to go to a phishing or scam resource, where they may be asked to enter personal data, read the terms of the offer (of course, fake), indicate bank card details (for example, to transfer a “commission”, on average, 200-300 rubles, for payment of compensation), the expert explained.

The Bank of Russia gave recommendations to Russians on how not to fall for the tricks of scammers. Citizens are offered to remain vigilant and not to disclose bank card data to unauthorized persons, under whatever pretext and in whatever way (phone call, website, email) they are trying to find out, the Central Bank said.
