How Jensen Huang started his fortune
The businessman was born in Taiwan, in the city of Taipei in 1963 but his parents decided to send him to the United Statesalong with his brother. They were adopted by their uncles and sent to study at Oneida Baptist Institute. This place was more like a reformatory than a regular school. Both brothers were allowed to live, eat and work in the institution, although they practically did not know how to speak English.
The boys moved to Oregon when their parents were able to emigrate to the United States. Jensen was able to spend his adolescence and was admitted to Oregon State University to study electrical engineering. Here he learned the magic behind computers and met his wife, Lori. As he also met the other co-founders of Ndivia: Chris Malachowsky and Curtis Priem.
After graduating as an engineer in 1984, he complemented his studies with a Master’s Degree in Electrical Engineering at Stanford University. He began his professional career at the same time as his last study. He worked for Advanced Micro Deviced (AMD) and then went to LSI Logic, which he would leave to found his company.
The three founders of Ndivia asked themselves: “Is this job something we would really love to do? Is this work worth doing? And is this job really difficult to do?” These questions are some of the hallmarks of your company, as well as your philosophy of betting on important things even when there is not yet an established market for them.
Ndivia started with a setback by focusing on DRAM memories, whose values fell by 90% in the mid-1990s. This mistake led them to launch the Graphics Processing Unit (GPU)a type of microprocessing that redefined computer games. The company continued along this path to accelerate work on programs that require great computational power such as data analysis, simulations, visualizations and artificial intelligence.
