Google wants to improve maps with AI

Google is currently in the process of introducing artificial intelligence across its product offering. Now it’s the turn of the map services.
In the future, Google’s maps will not only guide users from A to B, but also give them recommendations. For example, you will be able to ask for leisure tips or a place to go out on Saturday evening, explained the responsible Google manager Miriam Daniel. The software will then display a list of suggestions with reviews and photos. Software with artificial intelligence should be able to summarize reviews from the map app and, on this basis, answer detailed questions about the restaurant.
The function will initially launch in the USA. Google emphasized that when selecting suggestions, it should not take into account users’ personal preferences, but rather circumstances such as day of the week or time of year. Places on these lists are not sold to advertisers.
The recommendations are created by Google’s AI model Gemini based on data from the map service. Google wants to prevent so-called AI hallucinations, in which software simply invents things, by comparing their answers with the verified information.
Over 100 million changes per day
Google is also improving its maps with more detailed views to help with navigation. There are more than 100 million changes to map data every day, said Google manager Chris Phillips, who is responsible for geo-services. Some of them are automated – and in some cases they are fed in by companies and city administrations.
The navigation app Waze, which also belongs to Google, is testing a function that allows users to enter information about traffic disruptions by voice.
