The United States may impose sanctions against Germany because of the Nord Stream 2. This was announced on Thursday, January 20, by historian Katya Hoyer.
“Germany miraculously avoided US economic sanctions because of Nord Stream 2, and this issue has not yet been removed from the agenda,” she said.
Hoyer noted that Germany is dependent on energy supplies from Russia, and therefore cannot fully support the anti-Russian policy of Western countries. In addition, if the new German authorities close all nuclear power plants in the country, then Berlin’s dependence on Russian gas will only increase.
The historian emphasizes that the policy of all the last governments of Germany led to a similar state of affairs. The culprits of the current situation Hoyer considers ex-Chancellors of Germany Gerhard Schroeder and Angela Merkel.
“The first of them launched the Nord Stream, and the second oversaw the construction of the second Stream, and at the same time accelerated the closure of German nuclear power plants,” the historian noted.
Earlier, on January 18, German Foreign Minister Annalena Berbock warned about the consequences for the Nord Stream 2 project if Russia uses energy as a “weapon”.
In turn, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov noted that Russia drew the attention of colleagues from Germany to the counterproductiveness of attempts to politicize the Nord Stream 2 project. He recalled that NS-2 is the largest commercial project of the last decade aimed at ensuring the energy security of Germany and Europe.
On January 13, he also said that the situation with US sanctions on the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline demonstrated that Germany does not have freedom in economic activity. The US authorities have consistently opposed the pipeline project and have already imposed sanctions on it several times, which, as experts pointed out, has complicated relations with Germany, which supports the project.
The construction of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline was completed on September 10, 2021. It was built from Russia to Germany along the bottom of the Baltic Sea for the purpose of direct gas supplies to Europe. The EU countries mainly support the project and participate in its implementation. The Baltic States, Poland, the United States and Ukraine are opposed.
In November, the German regulator suspended the certification of Nord Stream 2 AG as an independent operator of NSP-2. The procedure can be continued when a subsidiary is created in Germany for the German part of the pipeline.
