The airline Condor wants to grow with city trips. The new destinations in Europe also include three German metropolises. The big competitor is unlikely to like that.
The holiday airline Condor is repositioning itself. From next summer, Lufthansa’s competitor wants to fly to the German destinations of Hamburg, Munich and Berlin in addition to several European capitals. The airline says one return flight per day is planned from Frankfurt.
The new European city destinations are Rome, Milan, Prague, Vienna and Zurich. Condor is thus entering direct competition with the Lufthansa Group, with which the airline is fighting over the conditions for feeder flights to Frankfurt.
Air traffic within Germany has only recovered weakly after the pandemic
The 2025 summer flight schedule begins at the end of March. Domestic German air traffic has only recovered weakly after the corona pandemic and is dominated by Lufthansa. According to the latest figures from the BDL industry association, less than half as many seats (48 percent) will be offered on domestic German flights in the winter up to and including March than before the pandemic.
Historically, the Condor only offered tourist destinations. On long-haul routes, there have been city trips to New York or Bangkok for a long time, as they are now also being introduced in Europe. “We are consistently developing our flight schedule in line with the needs of our guests,” says Condor boss Peter Gerber.
Another aspect is the “exorbitantly increasing location costs” in Germany. These prompted Condor to relocate five aircraft to Zurich, Vienna, Prague, Milan and Rome in order to grow economically there. No additional staff will be hired at the new bases, but the aircraft will be operated with German Condor crews, a spokeswoman adds. Condor recently announced that it would be withdrawing its offer in Hamburg.
