Mobile operators are starting to offer energy companies smart metering solutions and remote transmission of meter readings. Representatives of MTS, VimpelCom and Tele2 told Izvestia about this.
Megafon also has similar solutions, the company said. Such meters will record the voltage level and frequency, adjust and calculate electricity consumption, transfer archival data, reference information and perform other functions, said Alexey Merkutov from MTS.
It is no coincidence that cellular operators are bringing new products to the market right now. From January 1, the requirements of the law on smart meters came into force in the Russian Federation, requiring the installation and commissioning of such devices that connect to smart electricity metering systems and remotely transmit readings to energy sales companies in automatic mode. Such meters must be installed in new buildings without fail, and in old houses it is planned to change existing devices to new ones after the calibration period has elapsed.
It can be assumed that after a full replacement of meters, including in the old housing stock, the annual revenue from their maintenance can be at least 30 billion rubles – this is more than cellular companies now earn on all IoT projects taken together, Denis CEO of TelecomDaily estimated Kuskov. At the same time, inanimate subscribers (that is, meters) will remain with their operator for decades, the expert added.
