Fewer guests in September – still a good annual result

In September, hotels and guesthouses performed worse than a year earlier. The tourism business remains on course for growth.

Despite a weaker September, the balance for tourism in Germany has been positive so far this year. From January to September inclusive, hotels and other accommodation providers recorded 388.1 million overnight stays. That was 1.6 percent more than in the same period last year, as the Federal Statistical Office calculated.

The increase was particularly large among guests from abroad, who were initially hesitant after the corona pandemic: This group increased by 6.8 percent to 66.7 million overnight stays in the nine months. The number of domestic tourists rose by 0.6 percent to 321.4 million compared to the same period last year.

According to preliminary data, 48.7 million overnight stays by domestic and foreign guests were counted in September of the current year, 1.6 percent less than a year earlier. Only larger companies with at least ten overnight accommodations are taken into account in the statistics.
