Over 1,500 percent surcharge: Dealers in China benefit from Trump fan items

Donald Trump merchandise is up and running: Be it caps, T-shirts or Christmas tree decorations, demand for Trump products has been high since the election victory.

Donald Trump is not a fan of cheap exports from China. But his election victory gives at least some Chinese factories a boost. As the Hong Kong newspaper “South China Morning Post” reports, they are currently experiencing great demand for Trump fan items.

“When the US election results were announced, my sales shot up to over 3,000 orders in a single night,” 30-year-old e-commerce retailer Ricky Luo told the newspaper. His margins are therefore considerable. He buys Trump caps for $0.56 from manufacturers in China and sells them for $9 in the United States. The items are offered via the Chinese platform Temu or on Amazon.

According to the report, many of the Trump goods come from Yiwu in eastern China, which is considered one of the largest small goods trading and production centers in the world. “Since Trump’s victory, I have received 10 times more inquiries from traders in Yiwu,” another entrepreneur who specializes in helping Chinese companies sell in foreign markets told the newspaper.

Under Trump there is a risk that the trade dispute between Beijing and Washington will escalate further. During his first term in office, Trump imposed high punitive tariffs on many Chinese goods. During the election campaign he indicated that he wanted to continue this policy.
