Fewer companies founded in Germany

Given the weak economy and higher interest rates, the number of new businesses being founded is falling, especially small businesses. At the same time, more companies are giving up their business.

In a gloomy economic environment, fewer people in Germany are daring to take the step into self-employment. The number of start-ups fell in the nine months from January to September by 0.9 percent compared to the same period last year to 456,000, as reported by the Federal Statistical Office.

Around 90,700 companies were founded whose legal form and number of employees indicate greater economic importance – slightly less than in the same period last year (-0.8 percent). Small businesses, on the other hand, saw a decline of over a quarter (-25.4 percent). For founders, the prospects have clouded over with the rise in interest rates and the weakening economy.

According to statistics, the number of business registrations also fell – by 1.0 percent to around 547,500. In addition to new start-ups, this also includes business takeovers, conversions and moves from other registration districts.

The total number of business de-registrations, on the other hand, rose slightly by 0.7 percent to around 443,000. The number of complete business closures from January to September was around 356,800, slightly higher by 1.3 percent than in the same period last year. The number of companies with greater economic importance fell by 1.8 percent to around 70,900. The statisticians did not comment on the causes.
