The Association of German Shipowners and several companies have received threatening emails. The association spoke of attempts at intimidation. Most German shipping companies circumvent the Red Sea.
The Houthi rebels in Yemen have threatened German shipping companies in emails in recent months. The threats were directed, among other things, against shipping companies that called at Israeli ports and were traveling in seas near Yemen, said the Association of German Shipowners (VDR) from Hamburg. The VDR also received such threatening emails.
“The Houthi rebels obviously have well-researched email addresses, as the threats were also sent to individualized contacts,” said Irina Haesler, who is a member of the VDR management. Haesler spoke of targeted attempts at intimidation. The association is in contact with security authorities. The message does not reveal how many threatening emails German shipowners have received.
The Iran-aligned Houthis have been attacking merchant ships passing along Yemen’s coast since the Gaza war broke out. The Houthis say they want to force an end to the Israeli military operation. Most German shipping companies continue to avoid the Red Sea because of the danger.
