The police break up the protest camp of Tesla opponents next to the car factory in Grünheide near Berlin. Environmental activists believe the decision is inappropriate.
Environmental activists have criticized the dissolution of their protest camp against the Tesla car factory in Grünheide near Berlin as disproportionate. “We are angry (…). It is simply disproportionate,” said a spokeswoman for the activists in the forest camp. The mood is very tense. “We are determined to defend the occupation.”
The police headquarters decided this morning to completely disband the protest camp that has existed since the end of February near the Tesla car factory in Grünheide. The reason given was that there were massive violations of public safety and order. The environmental activists are protesting against the only European car factory owned by the US company Tesla, which is run by billionaire Elon Musk.
The police immediately asked the activists to clear the area with several tree houses in the forest. Some of Tesla’s opponents were temporarily arrested. Police spokeswoman Beate Kardels said that, based on what we know so far, the arrests were largely cooperative. Police forces also began initial clearing work in the camp. Activists also carried paraphernalia from the area themselves.
Police height rescuers continued to work to get Tesla opponents down from the trees. This is not a very large number of election occupiers. A police spokesman said he currently does not expect there to be any violent clashes between environmental activists and police forces.
