What Civil War is about
Civil War follows Kirsten Dunst as a journalist traveling through a violently divided United States, recently torn apart under the authoritarian rule of a three-term president played by Nick Offerman. The film set in the not-too-distant future has already earned criticism and praise for the way it plays into the current polarized state of American democracy.

“The viewer must make their own interpretation,” Garland told Entertainment Weekly about Civil War and its fictional president. “The film is actually being opaque. It is forcing the viewer to ask questions. Now, I know there are some people who don’t like thatwho want movies that answer all the questions. They don’t like to be confused about the intentions of the people making the movie. They want to be calm. But in my view, cinema is a broad church. There are a lot of different people making different types of films. “I want to make them like that.”
