Chocolate Santa Clauses and Santa Clauses are popular. However, production volumes in Germany have been declining for the second year in a row. The industry association gives several reasons for this.

The Christmas season can come: the chocolate Santa Clauses and Santa Clauses are ready on the supermarket shelves. The German confectionery industry produced around 164 million pieces this year, according to the industry association BDSI. That was 2 percent less than the previous year, when 167 million were produced. This is the second year in a row that the number has declined.

“The economic crisis in Germany does not stop at the popular chocolate Santa Clauses,” said Carsten Bernoth, managing director of the Federal Association of the German Confectionery Industry (BDSI). Companies would have to contend with cost burdens, both for important raw materials as well as for personnel, energy and bureaucracy. The export business in particular is difficult at the moment, says Bernoth.

According to the association, two thirds of the chocolate Santa Clauses and Santa Clauses produced were delivered to German grocery stores, department stores and specialist retailers. About a third was exported abroad.

Chocolate Santas are often much more expensive than they were a year ago. This is shown by a current evaluation of the price comparison portal Smhaggle for the German Press Agency. Depending on the brand and size, customers pay up to 50 percent more. The reason for this is the price of cocoa, which has risen sharply this year due to poor harvests.
