IG Metall is calling for warning strikes at Volkswagen on Monday

IG Metall is getting serious: At Volkswagen it is calling for work stoppages in several plants. This was announced by Lower Saxony’s IG Metall district manager Thorsten Gröger.

IG Metall has called for warning strikes at all VW plants on Monday. “Warning strikes will begin in all factories on Monday,” said IG Metall negotiator Thorsten Gröger on Sunday. “Volkswagen has to be responsible at the negotiating table for how long and how intense this dispute has to go.” He did not give any further details.

The peace obligation, in which strikes are not permitted, expired at midnight. IG Metall has already announced that it will call for temporary work stoppages at all locations from the beginning of December, but has not yet given any specific dates.

The last time there was a nationwide VW warning strike was in 2018

The conflict is about the pay of around 120,000 employees in the Volkswagen AG plants, where a separate in-house tariff applies. VW has so far refused any increase and is instead demanding a ten percent wage cut due to the company’s difficult situation. Plant closures and layoffs for operational reasons are also on the table. Both sides will meet on December 9th for their next round of collective bargaining.

Warning strikes at individual locations at VW last occurred in the 2021 company collective bargaining round. The last time there were comprehensive campaigns at all six major plants in West Germany was in 2018. According to IG Metall, more than 50,000 employees took part at the time.
