Another slump in electric car sales – a fifth less

The electric car remains a slow seller. Around 22 percent fewer battery vehicles were newly registered in November than in the previous year. That could change again starting next year.

Sales of electric cars in Germany fell again significantly last month. Almost 35,200 battery-powered cars hit the road in November, almost 22 percent fewer than in November of the previous year, as the Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA) announced. Their share of all new registrations was around 14 percent.

Manufacturers are under pressure

The business consultancy EY expects a trend reversal in electric vehicles in the coming year. “Manufacturers are under enormous pressure because the new emissions targets can only be achieved with a high proportion of electric cars in the new car fleet,” said EY transport expert Constantin Gall. “In order to boost sales of electric cars, some manufacturers are significantly reducing their prices or offering very cheap financing.”

The Association of the Automotive Industry is already recording a significant increase in production. According to the association, in October, for which the latest figures are available, 38 percent more electric cars were produced than in the same month last year: more than 143,000 vehicles, which was more than ever before.

Overall, the new car market stagnated in November. According to the KBA, 244,544 cars were newly registered across all drive systems and segments, roughly the same number as in the same month last year.

The VDA sees its forecast for the year as a whole confirmed. He continues to expect 2.8 million new cars in this country by 2024. That would be about as many as last year. “However, the comparison to pre-crisis levels remains significantly negative,” said the association.
