Recaro, a Swabian manufacturer of seats for sports cars with a long tradition, is giving up production in Germany. She emigrates to Italy. What does this mean for employees?
The traditional car seat manufacturer Recaro, based in Kirchheim/Teck (Esslingen district), is being taken over by an Italian investor. Production will be relocated to the Turin region and local production will be permanently closed, a spokeswoman said.
The buyer of Recaro Automotive GmbH is the Proma Group. An automotive supplier with sales of 1.1 billion euros. He specializes in the production of seat structures, body assemblies and chassis suspensions, among other things. A spokesman for the insolvency administrator confirmed the takeover by the buyer. The contract has already been signed.
Most recently, 215 people were employed in Kirchheim, as a spokeswoman said. Only a small proportion of jobs are to be retained. The Proma Group will continue operations with several employees from Recaro’s original sales and technical departments.
The managing director of IG Metall Esslingen, Alessandro Lieb, said that the takeover by Proma meant that around 20 jobs would be retained in the Stuttgart region. Production in Kirchheim will be discontinued and over 170 people will therefore lose their jobs. The works council has achieved that there is a transfer company for the affected employees.
Recaro Automotive GmbH recently had a turnover of almost 50 million euros. The company has been producing car seats for sports cars for decades and filed for bankruptcy a few months ago. The reason given was the loss of a major order.
